Chelsea sale money still in Roman Abramovich’s company’s account

The money from the sale of Chelsea is still in a frozen bank account belonging to Abramovich’s company The £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea remains in Roman Abramovich’s company’s frozen bank account with one MP claiming the Foreign Office has been “hopelessly slow” in organising the distribution of the money to help victims of the war in Ukraine. Three months after the sale of the club to Todd Boehly’s consortium, a small sum has been released for start-up costs for a charitable foundation but the majority of the £2.5 billion is in an English-registered Barclays bank account belonging to Fordstam Ltd, Abramovich’s holding company through which the Russian-born oligarch previously owned Chelsea. The money for the sale of the club has been frozen because Abramovich is one of the oligarchs who were sanctioned by the British government following Russia’s invasion.

Are you glad to see that?" Gallego affirmed that he was "glad to see that," adding, "I think the president has been holding back. He’s been holding back because he is a man of goodwill and he wants to give people the benefit of the doubt." Andy Burnham says there is a "case" for bringing utility companies back into public ownership to tackle the cost of living crisis, saying privatising the firms "is what got us into the mess that we're in right now".

The Labour mayor of Greater Manchester criticised the Tory leadership contenders for "promising more Thatcherism" if they get the keys to Number 10. He told Sky News's Kay Burley: "When we sold off the water, sold off the electricity, sold off the gas, sold the council homes, sold off the buses, sold that the trains, we found ourselves in a position where ordinary people can't afford those basics anymore." Instead, he said "change is needed in the way that we provide those essential services", and there is "certainly a case for more public control, more public ownership of essential utilities".
