The money from the sale of Chelsea is still in a frozen bank account belonging to Abramovich’s company

The £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea remains in Roman Abramovich’s company’s frozen bank account with one MP claiming the Foreign Office has been “hopelessly slow” in organising the distribution of the money to help victims of the war in Ukraine.

Three months after the sale of the club to Todd Boehly’s consortium, a small sum has been released for start-up costs for a charitable foundation but the majority of the £2.5 billion is in an English-registered Barclays bank account belonging to Fordstam Ltd, Abramovich’s holding company through which the Russian-born oligarch previously owned Chelsea.

The money for the sale of the club has been frozen because Abramovich is one of the oligarchs who were sanctioned by the British government following Russia’s invasion.
